TRENTON, June 10, 2019 — New Jersey Executive Director Peter Kasabach released the following statement regarding the release of the draft Energy Master Plan:
“The emphasis on land use in the draft Energy Master Plan released today is promising, particularly as it relates to prioritizing rooftop and carport solar and reducing emissions from the transportation sector through a reduction in vehicle miles traveled,” said New Jersey Future Executive Director Peter Kasabach. “Smart planning and investment to reduce car reliance, as noted in the plan, is the most effective way to reduce transportation sector emissions and can be done now rather than waiting for electric vehicles to reach a critical mass. The plan should include a greater focus on directing growth toward city and town centers and away from sprawl-inducing rural and suburban locations, and have a stronger tie to the State Plan, which was developed for this exact purpose.”
“Our cities and town centers need more and better supports to plan for an increase in density and mixed uses, creating walkable and bike-able places while de-prioritizing car use,” Kasabach continued. “We have a great opportunity to make a real difference in our environmental impact if we can get the planning right and pair it with appropriate incentives and support.”
